The International Ice Skating Union (ISU) accepted the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) decision to dismiss Russia’s appeal on Saturday (Feb. 26) and said that the third place in the figure skating team event at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics will be decided after the outcome of Canada’s appeal.
“The ISU welcomes the CAS decision, which confirms the first and second places in the figure skating team event at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games,” the ISU said on its website.
“The third place team will be determined after the CAS decision on the Canadian appeal,” it added.
The Russian Olympic Committee took first place in the figure team competition at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games in February, led by women’s singles standout Kamila Valyeva, followed by the United States, Japan, and Canada.
However, shortly after the team event, Valeryeva tested positive for doping, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) canceled the team medal ceremony and postponed the final results.
After investigating the case for nearly two years, CAS decided in January this year to suspend Valyeva for four years and strip the Russian Olympic Committee of its gold medal in the figure team event.
The ISU redistributed the figure team medals from the Beijing Olympics in accordance with the CAS decision.
The United States, which finished second, moved up to first place and Japan, which finished third, to second.
However, the ISU only scored the women’s single short program and free skating as zeroes, while the Russian Olympic Committee’s scores in the men’s short and free, pairs short and pairs, and ice dance rhythmic dance and free dance were included in the calculation.
As a result, the Russian Olympic Committee announced that it would receive the bronze medal with 54 points, one point ahead of fourth-place Canada (53 points).
Russia appealed the CAS decision, calling it a “politicized decision.” Canada also appealed, saying that “Russia’s total score in the figure team event should be annulled and Canada should be awarded the bronze medal.”
The ISU will finalize and announce the third-place finish once the outcome of the Canadian appeal is known.
If the appeal decision and ISU’s final judgment are expedited, the figure team awards ceremony that was not held at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games could be held at the Paris 2024 Summer Games. 사설 토토사이트
