“A team to be reckoned with? Now a team to be feared!”
“We want other teams to realize that Sookmyung Women’s High School is not a team to be reckoned with, but a team to be feared”
On April 4, the high school women’s division of the 79th National Men’s and Women’s Championships concluded. Sookmyung Girls’ High School took home the trophy. After defeating Sangju Girls’ High School, Hyosung Girls’ High School, and Masan Girls’ High School in the preliminary round, Sookmyung defeated Chuncheon Girls’ High School (quarterfinals) and Sunil Girls’ High School (semifinals) in the finals. In the final, they defeated Dongju Girls High School 72-51.
As a result, the team won its second championship this season after the association championship (April), and the first in 15 years since 2009.
The final was dominated by the trio of Lee Min-ji (28 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and two steals, including three three-pointers), Song Yoon-ha (20 points, 12 rebounds, five blocked shots, and three assists), and Yoo Ha-eun (10 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and four steals), all of whom were part of the FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup squad.
Sookmyung Women’s High School coach Lee Eun-hye said, “I was worried about the girls’ performance during the weekend league because their performance dropped a lot. In particular, we prepared more thoroughly for the finals so that the loss to Sunil Girls’ High School (in the weekend league) would not be a poison. The players who had been to the national team (Lee Min-ji, Song Yoon-ha, and Yoo Ha-eun) had lost a lot of fitness, and the other players were generally lacking in game fitness, so we often played practice matches against professional teams and unemployment tips. We also practiced a lot of physical fitness exercises 온라인카지노사이트 with the ball, which led to good results,” he said, citing physical fitness as the driving force behind the victory.
He also praised his players. “In the last few months, none of our players have had to take time off due to illness. I’m really grateful for that. The preparation process was smooth and the team atmosphere was good. I like their willingness to work on the court and their attitude that they have to do it. They took good care of themselves. I want to praise them a lot,” he said, applauding the team.
However, the quarterfinal match against Sunil Girls’ High School was a tough one. “Sunil Girls’ High School is a very tight and fast basketball team, so the players had a hard time physically, but they were able to overcome the obstacles and win the championship,” Lee reflected.
He added, “I want to instill the perception that Sookmyung Women’s College is not a ‘team to try’ but a ‘scary team’ in the eyes of other teams. I want the players to be proud of themselves.” He also left a message of support for his students.
Meanwhile, Sookmyung Women’s High School will compete in the 2024 Weekend League Wangjoongwang from the 9th. Sookmyung Women’s High School, which was assigned to Group B along with Chuncheon Women’s High School, Masan Women’s High School, and Bundang Management High School, is aiming to reach the top in the Wangjoong Wangjeon.
