The U.S. government refuted North Korea’s claim that a series of measures, including strategic nuclear submarines, sent to South Korea to strengthen its expansionary deterrence, are nuclear threats aimed at North Korea.
Asked about his position on North Korea’s defense statement, a Pentagon spokesman stressed that “the actions taken by the South Korea-U.S. alliance through the Washington Declaration and the Nuclear Consultative Group are a cautious response to North Korea’s dangerous and tension-raising actions.”
“Unlike North Korea’s actions, South Korea and the United States’ efforts to improve their defense posture and protect the people from North Korea’s public threat to use nuclear weapons do not violate the U.N. Security Council resolution,” he explained.
