It’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that he’ll be at the helm of the world’s top team for the foreseeable future.
“There is no buyout clause in Xabi Alonso’s contract,” transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano told a briefing on Monday, according to a report by British outlet CutOffside.
Alonso is considered one of the next greats. His leadership skills were recognized last season when he led Leverkusen to a respectable 13 wins, 6 losses, and 7 draws in 26 games in the Bundesliga.
This season, they’re more seasoned with experience. After 12 games in the Bundesliga, Alonso’s Leverkusen are unbeaten with 11 wins and one draw, and have moved ahead of Bayern Munich at the top of the table.
Leverkusen’s momentum isn’t limited to Germany. Leverkusen also won all four of their Europa League Group H matches to advance to the round of 16 early.
The performance was near-perfect. Leverkusen scored a whopping 12 goals in four games. They only conceded two goals. They were clearly better than the other teams.
His leadership skills have also put him on the radar of big clubs. Big clubs like Munich, Real Madrid, and Liverpool have reportedly put Alonso on their shortlists for the next managerial position.
The existence of a buyout clause has also been confirmed. When Alonso re-signed with Leverkusen last year, he reportedly inserted a buyout clause that would automatically terminate his contract if Real, Munich or Liverpool made an offer.
A specific amount was also revealed. In order to trigger the clause, Leverkusen would have to pay between €15 million and €18 million.
This was not true. Fabrizio Romano said: “There is no official clause that would allow another club to facilitate Alonso’s departure. It’s just a verbal agreement between Alonso and the Leverkusen hierarchy.”
“Alonso will be a target for several clubs next summer. At the end of the day, Leverkusen will send him to the best team in the future,” he added, leaving the door open for a variety of possibilities.
